Children are very important in the Mentawai culture and are raised up in a very particular way. Nothing is forbidden to them and they can do what they wish as soon as they are capable of doing so. This results in seeing three year old boys skillfully use a machete or eight year olds already trying their first cigarettes. Rarely in my life have I seen such beautiful, well behaved and happy children.
